![]() His work, published by influential journals including The Strategist and The Interpreter, details the complex history of the conflict, but from a first-hand perspective, as Dr Simpson moved through countries and areas bordering the conflict zone. ![]() “Studying Global Politics provides the tools to better understand and analyse international affairs and global issues, particularly in terms of assessing the reliability of sources and identifying disinformation/misinformation and propaganda from dubious sources,” Dr Simpson says. This work also informs his teaching in Global Politics courses at UniSA. UniSA senior lecturer in International Studies Dr Adam Simpson travelled to Eastern and Northern Europe earlier this year to research the conflict in Ukraine, using his expertise to sift fact from fiction in a war clouded by disinformation campaigns. Historians have the benefit of hindsight in developing narratives that provide understanding about the past, but for real time analysis of current geopolitical events, the discipline of International Studies provides more immediate insights. Three decades on, author William Faulkner’s quote: “ The past is never dead, it’s not even past” would prove a better epithet, as the Russia-Ukraine conflict – which many have called the most momentous European conflict since World War II – is partly a legacy of that era. In the early 1990s, the dissolution of the Soviet Union and the rise of democratically elected governments across several East European countries, led one political scientist to claim it wasn’t just the end of the Cold War, but the “End of History”. The articles he has written about the conflict, from a unique vantage point, offer clarity within the fog of war and underline why Australians should care about a conflict that is more than 10,000km away. Earlier this year, UniSA expert in international affairs Dr Adam Simpson travelled to Europe to research the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

While audiobooks have existed for decades, they were traditionally in cassette or CD form. "They captivate readers who may never have picked up an author in print, expanding the opportunities to reach that audience beyond the usual publishing cycles." ![]() "The audiobook has rapidly become an essential part of the whole publishing ecosystem," explains Sarah Rigby, publishing director of independent book publisher Elliott & Thompson, based in London. Major publishers now have dedicated audio divisions, with the biggest titles often narrated by Hollywood talent. 'An essential part of the whole publishing ecosystem'Īudiobooks are the fastest growing arm of publishing – total worldwide listening hours on Amazon's audiobook platform Audible alone increased by 25% year-over-year in 2022, according to data seen by the BBC. Everyone is trying to keep eyeballs and ears on one place, so having audiobooks on Spotify becomes a natural fit." "All streaming platforms want to keep you on the platform and have as much original content as possible. Spotify also stands to win big from offering audiobooks in its regular subscription package, adds Cobb. So, introducing them to the format, alongside other audio entertainment options, is a great thing." There are hundreds of millions of Spotify subscribers – a good proportion have probably never listened to an audiobook before. "It's what we've been striving for, for a long time. Michele Cobb, executive director of the Audio Publishers Association, based in New York, says audiobooks' integration on Spotify is a coup for the industry. According to US trade organisation Audio Publishers Association, its 28 members – including publishing giants Penguin Random House, HarperCollins and Simon & Schuster – saw audiobook revenue grow 10% to $1.8bn (£1.48bn) in 2022, marking more than a decade of double-digit growth. Spotify's inclusion of audiobooks in its subscription service follows the format's continual growth in popularity and profit. The company hopes the free 15 hours will hook consumers in the world of audiobooks, opening revenue streams and tempting subscribers to purchase additional listening hours, as opposed to the à la carte pricing model favoured by rival platforms. Early signs show promising potential: at Spotify's Q3 earnings call, Ek said subscribers in the UK and Australia had already listened to more than 28% of its audiobook catalogue, in just two weeks. Spotify has 213 million global subscribers – which represents a huge market for publishers to tap. ![]() "And just like in music and podcasting, we're really excited to be able to bring all the amazing tools that we built for creators and consumers alike to enable more discovery of these amazing audiobooks to the entire world." "Just like in music and podcasting, we believe that many more consumers want to consume audiobooks and want to listen to audiobooks," said Daniel Ek, Spotify founder and CEO, at the feature's announcement in New York. Bestsellers and literary classics are now housed in the same app as music and podcasts: a " seamless one-stop destination for all things audio", according to Spotify's announcement. The feature is set roll out in the US by the end of 2023. In recent years, audiobooks have become a multibillion-dollar industry, with dedicated subscription services, from both big conglomerates and independent companies, driving most of this revenue. But their addition to Spotify's streaming selection marks a watershed moment.įrom 4 October, Spotify Premium subscribers in the UK and Australia have been able to access up to 15 hours of audiobook content per month – from more than 150,000 titles – at no additional cost. ![]() ![]() You can expect to see at least a link-local ( fe80::/10 range) and some public IPv6 addresses, most likely a few Privacy Extension addresses among them, and maybe some ULAs as well.ĭnsmasq (Pi-hole's embedded DHCP server) employs some heuristics to predict a client's EUI-64 interface identifier part and will automatically associate the hostname known for the same MAC if such an address exists. Yet acquiring such a lease won't stop your client to create other additional IPv6 addresses for itself (which I tried to refer to by "heavily favour client-side auto-configuration"). No, not for all of a client's IPv6 addresses.Įven if a client acquires a DHCPv6 lease, its hostname will only get registered for the DHCPv6-assigned IPv6 address. ( Unless its a very old router not supporting IPv6 at all). If your router offers neither, your clients will bypass Pi-hole via IPv6. If you router has no separate IPv6 DNS configuration options, you may consider switching off IPv6 altogether. You have to stop your router from offering itself as DNS server (or those assigned by your ISP). If you want to handle local DNS for IPv6 correctly, switching off DHCP is not enough, even if it means switching off DHCPv6 as well in your router (not all routers clearly make that DHCP/DHCPv6 distinction). I believe supporting SLAAC started with the introduction of Win10.Īndroid only does and only ever did SLAAC. Windows preferred DHCPv6 for a long time. MacOS and Linux could do all three early on. This also means your clients may choose any of the DNS servers offered via Stateless DHCPv6 or NDP in your network. Dropping support for any one option may mean to shut off clients from IPv6 connectivity. Ultimately, it's a client's OS (and its configuration, of course) that decides which mechanisam is employed. The two former options heavily favour client-side auto-configuration. Only the latter Stateful DHCPv6 is about equivalent to DHCP for IPv4, but different enough to be a separate protocol in its own right. If you want to bring them all in, you've got to feed them according to their needs.Ĭontrary to IPv4, IPv6 clients can join a network via SLAAC or Stateless or Stateful DHCPv6. With IPv6, there's more than just sheep on the meadow, you'd have to care for cows and goats as well. ![]() ![]() In case you missed it, the premise is that Brainiac has mind-controlled the Justice League, which is why you have to murder them all. We also get to see a bit of the game's Metropolis City, which is apparently twice the size of Arkham Knight's map, and is a Sunset Overdrivey spread of bright colours, teeming with chrome-on-purple footsoldiers deployed by the game's nemesis, Brainiac. There's a direct nod to the developer's previous Batman Arkham games in the shape of a ranged countering system, which lets you parry an attack with bullets to various effect - some enemies will be stunned, others will get really angry. In any case, as the philosopher wrote - guns in superhero games suck ass. The same can't be said for the emphasis on guns: each hero can wield certain categories of weapon, but there appears to be plenty of overlap. I feel like all these techniques will blur together in practice, but there's just enough suggestion of variety to hold my interest. I quite like the sound of that.ĭeadshot gets a jetpack, for less fancy 360 degree flight, and King Shark can, er, jump really high. Boomerang gets a gauntlet that lets him throw his boomerang and teleport to its location, a bit like Sombra in Overwatch, while also conferring bursts of super-speed on level surfaces. Harley gets a grapple gun and a Bat drone that serves as a mobile grappling point, a neat answer to the perennial Spider-Man game question of whether Spider-Man is really swinging from buildings or hooking onto thin air. We also learn about how those abilities differ, at least in theory. But this is a lot more convincing than the first gameplay footage, mostly because it walks you through the opening sections of the game and shows you how King Shark, Captain Boomerang, Deadshot and Harley Quinn acquired their open-world-friendly traversal abilities (they stole them from a Justice League museum), rather than springing them on you and expecting you to cheer at how CRAZY everything is. It still requires an online connection, even when playing in single player, and as far as we know, it'll still have a battle-pass with cosmetic items. The game's fundamental conceptual hang-up remains - they've taken four DC supervillains with different powers that lend themselves to different kinds of story, and smurged them all into one big live-servicey open world spaff 'em up, strongly defined by guns. With the spawn director fixed up I’m now moving onto setting up then iterating over and tweaking the spawn configurations for these towns trying to find the sweet spot in loot density and respawn times. I ended up finding a couple of problems and regressions since legacy, mainly a race condition with our loot position marker registration and our spawn director initialization, also another bug where SpawnerCellUpdatesPerFrame in ServerConfig was being ignored due to cell updates not being tracked properly. This led to me going deep into our spawning system to find bugs and get to the bottom of what was going on. This week I’ve been continuing adding persistent town loot back into the game which lead into a deep dive into our spawning system.Īfter setting up a whole bunch of extra loot spawn points in all the towns (extra points compared to the set that the loot frenzy events run off) and configuring our spawn director to spawn loot into them I noticed that the spawns weren’t really behaving as expected and often the explicitly set loot points weren’t being used and the system was falling back to random positioning instead.
